JOB HUNT

DOUBLE TROUBLE:-

24th June 2011 is the date which has now become a nightmare for me. It was just like any other day till 1:30 P.M. It was this time that I received the call from a very reputed bank in U.S. for my final interview. You must be thinking that what is the trouble in attending an interview and that too when I had already given so many of them but here is the twist I had one more interview with one of the Big 4 company.

Now just take a look at the chronology of the events :
a) 1:00 P.M. received call for interview and took the mobile number of the HR. He wanted me to be in the office by 3. I negotiated for 5 & he agreed.

b) Suddenly realized that I have another interview @ 7. I tried to reschedule the interview but I couldn't because I took a wrong mobile number.

c) Anyways I came to my room @ 2 and thought of reaching the office and then dealing the rest. Another trouble here- I was not having any ironed shirt. As I started to do it there was a power cut.

d) I then thought to wear a jacket over it. Then I again called up the same number. Now I was not having enough balance to make a call. I went to shop to get it recharged and here again a trouble; don't know why but every mobile shop was closed. I ran through every nook and corner but in vain. Finally I decided to reach the company and see what I can do.

e) I reached there office @ 3:30. But I was told to call up the concerned person without which I can't move in at all
f)After a lot of trouble with the security I got company's reception number but what to do with it, there was no balance.

g) Somehow I got it recharged from one of my friend and made the call again. Now I was told to wait for some time. Meanwhile it started raining and to further add to my miseries this time my battery gave first warning and still there was no response from the company.

h) I felt dejected of missing such a great opportunity and there was no time to lament as there was another big interview in next couple of hours.

i) I told the entire situation to one of my seniors who was our mentor as well. He told me to go for the interview first with the bank and take upon another interview after that as it was only a telephonic round.

j) So I left for it @ 5 and called up my friend to give a fully charged battery on the way. I reached the office @6 and suddenly I received the call from HR and I told the entire story.
The only good thing in the entire day so far was this that the person was very kind he understood my condition completely and also allowed me to take up the interview on some other day.

k) I left the office @6:30 and was wondering how I will give my interview now. Meanwhile my friend also reached there with a battery. We both started to walk from there hoping to get a bus but couldn't get one. It started to rain again and more heavily this time and we had no other option then to keep walking in the rain.

l) We finally got a bus @6:50;. All wet we ran into our room and I received the call @ 7:03

It took around half an hour before I finished the interview. I took a deep breadth and just mesmerised what the hell happened with me throughout the day. I felt as if something was stopping me from giving interviews. But now I realize that it wasn't anyone else but me. I was so unprepared for an opportunity like this. That very day I washed up my shirts and trousers and kept them in the closet after ironing them properly also now I always charge my phone on time and keep minimum balance.

This was the hardest way I was made to learn, how to manage oneself before managing a company. Life is moving like this road so many twists and turns  :((( God when it will become an easy ride !!!!

JOB HUNT

No.4

It's a mere coincidence that my fourth opportunity came from one co. out of Big 4. The profile was again something which I can only dream about, Structured Finance.

As the co. was from Big 4, so you can expect that size of our family(for walk-ins) could have only grown. This time almost 20 of us went for the proceedings. No one knew what's gonna happen in such big co. Though there were few who learned every possible thing about the co. through google.

Again as usual proceedings began with an aptitude test. followed by an Essay writing. We had to wait for the results for almost 3 hours. Meanwhile everyone was thinking of their future plans with the company- We will live nearby, have food in the office- and all sort of crap. Then came the time for our results. My heart was pounding, I could even hear it beating faster than a bullet train. He started calling names of shortlisted students and my heartbeats growing all the time. He took my name and then stopped.

Out of 20 he called out 6. First we were confused whether 6 are selected or rejected. But he made it clear that we are though to next round and rest can come tomorrow for a different profile. We were send for the HR interview(one step closer to the dream). We gave our interviews and came back. On the way I discussed with others how was there interview and they all told me briefly about it. After listening to everyone I was sure of being there 2nd choice as first was sure to be my friend Abhishek Chadda.

They gave the results of HR round after 2 days. I was told that only 1 is selected. I thought that game is over for me. But again miracle happened and only I was through for the final round (US round as they quote it)...:))

I thought my day of reckoning is very near. I enquired from everyone about this US round but no one was aware. Eventually my telephonic interview started and went through for around 30 min. His feedback was that I am too young and my competitors are experienced but he was quiet impressed from my communication and knowledge of the subject. He told to give the results in couple of weeks.

And by now you can guess the results....I am again rejected...:((((( What the hell is wrong with these people. How am I supposed to get experience unless they give me my first job.

I am moving on....

JOB HUNT

New Day New Company....

My third opportunity. Again our happy family went for a walk in. This time the profile was content analyst. Majority of us were not even aware of what that means but still we went.

Day began as usual everyone wasting there Rs.100 for bus pass again. After clearing all hurdles we reached our destiny for prospect content analyst. Proceedings began with general aptitude test. One of my friend Hardik is so terrified of aptitudes that he gives even before writing one.

Test lasted for around an hour but then we had to wait for our so called results for almost 3hours. As the results came everyone of us was through except one fellow. Then as usual we were told to leave for the day and come back again  after 2 days.

This timeeveryone was a bit content as there bus pass proved useful today :) We reached our hostels dreaming of becoming content analyst...

Day came for the next round and usual we all went in there. This time it wan't gonna be that easy and we were  sure of eliminations. Our fear proved out to be right when we saw the aptitude questions. We finished that in about an hour(somehow). We were sure that this is it and we have to search for another vacancy leaving behind our dream of becoming content analysts. Results came and only one went through to next round. He also surrendered in the next round.

Everyone came back consoling each other by saying such boring content analyst jobs do not worth genius like us :)))

Fire still burns and so do our hunt. We will make it some day for sure

NEXT MOVE :-

After Hexagon interview I was not even having the time to lament for the loss. As already told I really felt bad on not getting selected, but was a bit content as it was only my first attempt and then to all wasn't lost.

Firstly I lost the opportunity only to a experienced guy. Secondaly I received really important feedback from the HR. She told me my weaknesses and my strength upfront.

Now the new company was announced in our college for recruitment- PROBE EQUITY. I was pretty happy again as the criteria which they mentioned were making me a very strong candidate. Days passed; then weeks; company didn't turned up for interviews. We all felt let down. Then finally after a gap of a month & a half news came that they had shortlisted 6 candidates(my was there again).

Our first round was telephonic round after which only 4 were selected for the next round. Their is still twist in the tail. Out of all 4 selected only I got the call for next round and my interview was taken for around 15min. or so.

Again a wait for a couple of days and then I went to the placement committee to get any information for the result. Now comes one more name in my near missed opportunities; Company freezed the recruitment process for some time[another way to say no one is selected :(...].

Move on again......

JOB HUNT-:

This section won't include any job opportunity but will showcase my close chances of getting one!!!

First Opportunity-

My first opportunity came quiet early than expected. I was really very excited. Almost 10 students of our batch applied for the post, but the company, Hexagon Capital Advisory Ltd. shortlisted only 4 of us who didn't had any experience.

We went in all neatly dressed up. It started with a small aptitude round on the basis of which 2 were eliminited.
It happened all in just 15 minutes. We all felt shocked, but we realised that any case it has to be done as there was only one vacancy. Than we went through HR round and cleared it successfully and were told by the HR that we will be called again for technical round.

After a couple of days we were again called for the interview by the research head. This time we were a bit more afraid as it was the technical round. Our fear came to fore when the Research Head came  and called us individually for the interview.
I was the first. Interview lasted for around 20 min, but I felt like being inside for almost an hour. For the candidate next  to me it lasted on 6 min. I thought that probably he was satified with her and thought that I had missed an opportunity.

We all came back after being told that results will come only after a couple of days. We were all worried again. By 8 in the night I received calls from my friends who were interviewed along with me that they have got the reject mail from the company. I felt sad about it but at the same time that meant, I am the only person in contention for the job.

All my friends were quiet sure of it and even i was. But for the next three days co. did't communicated anything and I thought there is something wrong. Again I was right, they had started open interviews.
I knew that now it will be tough for me to defend my position and same happened. I lost my first golden opportunity to a guy who was having a year experience in the same field.

It was tough to accept the loss as it was my first experience, but only consolidation was  I went to the final round and lost to a deserving candidate.

And I moved on....

BUYBACK & DELISTING

Share repurchase or share buyback refers to the process of company buying back its own share from its shareholders.
If a company is sufficiently matured and quite stable there may not be a scope for redeploying the internal accruals back in business as the ROE may be less than the opportunity cost. Such business may either pay high dividends or resort to buyback. It could also be because of the following:-
- Correction of over-capitalisation.
- Shoring up management stakes.
- Exit mechanism.
Companies Act was amended in 1998 to provide for the share buyback, prior to which only exit optio was to sell shares in open markets.
CASE-
Bajaj Auto ltd. is a unique case in buyback history. It was done with a motive to reduce cross holding in the co. Bajaj Tempo which had 9% shares valued at that time around Rs. 400 crores. In return Bajaj auto would transfer its 23% stake in Bajaj Tempo.
Problem was in terms of valuing this buyback as Bajaj Tempo holding in Bajaj Auto was close to 7 times to that of Bajaj Auto in Bajaj tempo.

DELISTING:-
It is a process by which co. whose shares are listed on any stock exchange is taken private once again by terminating listing agrement with the stock exchange. AKA "going private".
It is of two types:
a) Voluntary delisting- In this type company by its own will goes for delisting.
b) Compulsory delisting- In this type a co. is compelled to opt for delisting because of violating terms of agreement with the stock exchange.
In India it is done as per the SEBI Guidelines 2003.
CASE:
Digital Global Soft India(Digital India) was delisted using reverse book building method. Digital India which started in 1998 as a JV between DEC U.S.A. & Hinditron later became subsidiary of Compaq. After H.P. acquired Compaq, Digital India became subsidiary of HP, which announced voluntary delisting so that Digital India could become 100% subsidiary of HP.
Offer was made at Rs. 750 per share which was 50% premium on past 26 weeks average. But most offers wre received for Rs. 850. The final dea size worked out to be Rs. 1418 crore as opposed to 1000 crore makin it the largest exit offer till then in India.

CA/CFAs Vs. MBA Finance

The tryst between the CA/CFAs and the MBA Finance seems to be getting worse, with CA/CFA having an edge over the MBA-F.  CA/CFA have in depth knowledge of the subject, as they are more exposed towards it. Whereas an MBA-F student has to diversify in different aspects of the business and hence in terms of knowledge of the finance(2-year course) they face tough competition from the CAs.                                                                     INDUSTRY EXPECTATIONS
FINANCIAL SERVICES-
1.Banking
2. Stock market
3. Commodities
4. Debt market
5. Insurance
6. Mutual funds.
CORE FINANCE
 1. Capital budgeting
 2.Capital structure
 3. Working capital managemet                                                                                                                                                                                                                             For the core finance job companies want CAs to take care of the proceedings. They don't generally prefer MBA-F in this area. MBA-F students are employable in area of financial services and for this as well they have to increase their financial base by way of value addition courses like NCFM modules by NSE. So in a way their career is hard but once they get into the corporate world then their 360 degree business knowledge takes them through..... So don't worry ....cheer up :)))))))

strategic finance management

The study of finance keeping in mind the strategic goals of the company for a long term. These days financial management is being reffered to as "strategic financial management" in order to give it a broader scope.
There are various tasks associated with it. They are as under :-

  • Capital budgeting
  • Risk management
  • Financial analysis
  • Working capital management
  • Foreign exchange & risk management
  • Derivatives
  • Asset pricing
  • Investment banking
  • Mergers & Acquisitions
All the aforesaid areas are the seperate fields altogether. One has to develop his insights into various aspects such aspects before he considers himself as the expert in this area of financial excellence.
Finance which is generally considered to be an emotion less subject, but due to the emergence of "SFM" this notion about the finance is undergoing a drastic change.
Finance is slowly converting to phynance i.e. the study about the human. After the big scams like that of stock market by Harshad Mehta or the latest 2G spectrum scam by A Raja has made the impact of human activity very clear.
Next big thing in SFM is the reason behind the organistional structure- why the came up; what the logic behind the big or small size organisation. Various  problems are-:
  • Agency problems
  • Goal conflict
  • Rent seeking behavior
  • Free ridership
  • Bounded rationality.
In the next step SFM talks about the strategy formulation by the company keeping in mind the human behavior.

Mckinsey's 7S Framework

Every enterpreneur is keen to know how his/her organisation is positioned, but to get to the realty is not an easy nut to crack. He has to not only take into consideration his own capabilities and weaknesses but also that of the competitor's .
Mckinsey's 7S model is one such framework meant to understand the positioning of the organisation. Condition in which the organisation at the moment is the result of internal factors or external or the mixture of both.
It involves 7 independent factors, 3 hard and 4 soft, as shown.
'Hard' elements are easy to find and management can directly influence them.
'Soft' elements are kind of intangible and hence are hard to recognize and are influenced by the culture of the organisation.
Strategy:-Action plan to get and maintain the competitive advantage.
Structure:-Its the organisational authority and the chain of command, who reports to whom etc.
Systems:-How to do the work and patterns to be followed.
Shared values:-these are the core values of the company that is also reflected in the quality of the work of the employees.
Skills:-It talks about the actual competencies of the employees and their skills.
Staff:-The employees and their general capabilities.
Style:-The style of the leadership adopted.

Destiny

"Destiny" is not just a word, it holds the entire journey of life. Men who at times feel himself to be the maker of his fate, is infact a slave at the disposal of his destiny.
One can really think himself to be superior than it but ultimately his life is the replica of what his destiny was!!!!!!

"MEN IS THE MAKER OF HIS DESTINY".......is it true???????????

                                                      ............JUST PONDER OVER!!!
